Position: Steel Detailer / Draftsman

Job Responsibilities

• Produce structural steel and miscellaneous metal shop drawings, erection drawings, and details from contract documents and engineer-of-record drawings.

• Develop accurate piece and assembly drawings for fabrication, including member sizes, connection details, weld symbols, bolt callouts, and material notes.

• Create and maintain Bills of Material (BOM), bolt summaries, and fab/erection packages aligned with STLHD FAB shop standards.

• Coordinate with the fabrication lead/foreman and project team to ensure drawings support production sequencing and delivery schedules.

• Review drawings for constructability, clashes, missing information, and scope gaps, then proactively generate RFIs when needed.

• Incorporate revisions and manage drawing version control to ensure the shop always builds from the latest approved set.

• Support field teams with clarification sketches, as-builts, and updated details when site conditions require adjustments.

• Collaborate with engineers, GCs, and other trades to resolve connection questions and maintain schedule momentum.

• Maintain organized digital files and drawing logs, supporting consistent documentation and turnover.

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years experience in steel detailing/drafting for structural steel and/or miscellaneous metals.

• Strong understanding of steel fabrication and erection practices, including connections, bolt grades, weld types, and tolerances.

• Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, architectural plans, specifications, and RFI responses.

• Proficient in detailing/drafting software (examples include Tekla, SDS2, AutoCAD, Advance Steel, or similar).

• High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple drawing packages at once.

• Strong communication skills, able to work independently while supporting team production goals.

• Willingness to work overtime when needed to keep projects on schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience detailing both structural steel and misc metals (stairs, ladders, rails, embeds, frames, mezzanines, support steel).

• Familiarity with AWS weld symbols and common AISC detailing standards.

• Experience coordinating with shop production teams and supporting field fixes.

• Basic understanding of CNC data, DXFs, or export workflows (a plus, not required).

• Drawings are clear, buildable, and aligned with shop standards.

• Minimal rework, fewer surprises in the field, and smooth flow from detailing to fabrication to erection.

• Proactive communication when information is missing, unclear, or risky.
