Research Engineering Technician I (Part Time)
This position assists the engineering team in supporting research in ground and space based astronomy to accomplish the goals of the principal investigator and his/her program. Work includes participating in the effort of designing, assembling, and testing of mechanical systems in support of telescopes and astronomical instrumentation. Additionally, the position will assist with scheduling the procurement of materials to ensure they arrive on time and meet specification, assist with as-built documentation of integrated system, participate in lessons learned process reviews as required, assist in assembling, calibrating, and maintaining, test equipment, and conduct inventory and organize tooling in the lab.

Duties & Responsibilities- Participate in the effort of designing, assembling, and testing of mechanical systems in support of telescopes and astronomical instrumentation.
- Create CAD drawings for parts and assemblies and follow up with machine shops for fabrication of parts.
- The work will be done with close supervision from engineers and other team members.
- Requires frequent communication with engineers and supervisor to accomplish the work.
- Communication will primarily be within the group and/or project.
- Skills will primarily be gained through interactions at work and being mentored by senior team members.
- Assist with scheduling the procurement of materials to ensure they arrive on time and meet specification.
- Assist with as-built documentation of integrated system.
- Participate in lessons learned process reviews as required.
- Assist in assembling, calibrating, and maintaining, test equipment, and conduct inventory and organize tooling in the lab.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
- Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to possess a valid Arizona drivers license and be able to drive University vehicles according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .
- High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
- Experience with mechanical design, hand tools, and mechanical assembly.
- Experience with space or ground based telescope and instrumentation design.
- Experience in SolidWorks or other equivalent design packages.
