Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Tax Manager (open to Tax Manager or Tax Director level based on experience) to join a growing public accounting firm in Phoenix, AZ. This role is responsible for tax compliance, tax planning, client advisory services, staff supervision, and workflow management, primarily supporting small business clients. The ideal candidate has extensive public accounting experience, strong technical tax expertise, and proven leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Compliance & Technical Expertise

• Prepare and review federal and state tax returns including Forms 1120, 1065, 1040, 1041, 990, and 5471

• Manage multi-state tax filings and compliance requirements

• Provide tax planning and advisory services for small businesses and owner-managed entities

• Research and resolve complex tax issues

• Ensure compliance with IRS regulations and applicable tax laws

Client Management

• Manage and maintain relationships with a portfolio of small business clients

• Lead client meetings and provide strategic tax guidance

• Communicate deadlines, deliverables, and tax strategies clearly

• Serve as a trusted tax advisor beyond compliance services

Leadership & Staff Development

• Supervise, mentor, and train junior and senior staff

• Review tax returns and workpapers for accuracy and completeness

• Delegate assignments and manage team workloads

• Ensure projects are completed on time and within firm standards

Project & Workflow Management

• Manage multiple tax engagements simultaneously

• Monitor deadlines, budgets, and resource allocation

• Oversee peak tax season workflow and productivity

Systems & Software

• Utilize QuickBooks, UltraTax, Canopy, and other tax/accounting software

• Maintain accurate documentation and engagement records

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of public accounting experience

• Strong experience with Forms 1120 (Corporate), 1065 (Partnership), and 1040 (Individual) returns

• Experience serving small business clients

• Proven experience reviewing tax returns and managing complex engagements

• Team leadership and staff supervision experience

• Strong knowledge of US GAAP

• Experience with multi-state taxation

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Strong project management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA (Certified Public Accountant) license preferred

• Experience in tax advisory, tax planning, and compliance

• Experience leading client meetings and providing financial guidance

• Additional tax certifications or advanced coursework
