Job Title: Veterinary Assistant

Job Summary:

The Veterinary Assistant supports Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians in providing compassionate, high-quality medical care to companion animals. This role focuses on patient care, client service, and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Support:

• Assist Veterinary Technicians during physical exams and treatments
• Data Entry – transfer from paper chart to electronic medical record
• Safely restrain dogs, cats, and small pets for procedures
• Prepare and clean exam rooms between appointments
• Set up surgical and dental suites as directed
• Clean, sterilize, and maintain medical instruments
• Monitor patients before and after procedures
• Fill medications and prepare for discharge
• Collect and prepare laboratory samples (fecal, urine, blood – under supervision)

Patient Care:

• Feed, water, walk, and comfort hospitalized patients
• Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, and treatment areas
• Bathe animals when necessary
• Observe and report changes in behavior, appetite, or medical condition

Client & Administrative Support:

• Assist with appointment flow and patient check-ins
• Provide basic pet care instructions under supervision
• Maintain accurate medical records
• Stock exam rooms and monitor inventory levels

Required Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Passion for animal care and welfare
• Ability to handle animals safely and confidently
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to lift 40–50 lbs and stand for extended periods
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:

• Veterinary Assistant certification or training
• Previous experience in a small animal clinic
• Basic understanding of medical terminology
• Familiarity with common small animal breeds and behavior

Work Environment:

• Busy small animal veterinary clinic
• Exposure to dogs & cats
• May include weekends and rotating shifts
• Physical demands include bending, lifting, and standing

Compensation:

Pay range: $15.15 – $22.00 per hour , based on experience, certification, and skill level.

Compensation may vary depending on:

• Prior veterinary clinic experience
• Veterinary Assistant certification or formal training
• Technical skills (lab work, anesthesia monitoring, dental assisting, etc.)
• Reliability, teamwork, and client service skills
