Position Summary

The Interventional Radiology Registered Nurse (IR RN) provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic image-guided procedures. The IR RN works collaboratively with interventional radiologists, technologists, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure patient safety, comfort, and high-quality outcomes before, during, and after procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Pre-Procedure Care
  • Assess and prepare patients for interventional procedures, including reviewing medical history, allergies, lab results, and pre-procedure instructions.
  • Obtain informed consent and ensure patient understanding of procedures.
  • Establish and maintain intravenous (IV) access; administer medications as ordered.
• Intra-Procedure Care
  • Assist the interventional radiologist during procedures by circulating, monitoring, and documenting patient status.
  • Administer moderate sedation and monitor vital signs, level of consciousness, and comfort throughout procedures.
  • Maintain sterile technique and assist with equipment setup and troubleshooting.
• Post-Procedure Care
  • Provide recovery care, including monitoring for complications and ensuring hemostasis at puncture sites.
  • Educate patients and families on post-procedure care, discharge instructions, and follow-up requirements.
  • Document all aspects of care accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
• Additional Duties
  • Participate in emergency response situations (e.g., code events).
  • Maintain competency in radiology-specific nursing skills and sedation practices.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient care and workflow efficiency.
  • Comply with regulatory and infection control standards.

Qualifications

Education:

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (BSN preferred).

Licensure/Certification:

• Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in [State].

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (required).

Experience:

• Minimum of 2 years of critical care, emergency, or perioperative nursing experience (required).
• Prior interventional radiology or cardiac cath lab experience (preferred).

Skills and Abilities

• Strong assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency with moderate sedation and hemodynamic monitoring.
• Ability to respond calmly and effectively in high-pressure or emergent situations.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Competence in electronic documentation and radiology information systems.
