Medical Laboratory Technician Job Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of clinical experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or in a related healthcare field
• Associate’s degree in Sciences or related field (relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree)
• ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized Medical Laboratory Technology certification
• Current BLS certification
• Proficiency in laboratory tests, equipment operation, and clinical support
• Strong communication skills and attention to detail

Hospital Laboratory Technician Responsibilities

• Perform a wide range of laboratory tests and procedures to identify normal and abnormal components
• Conduct blood group, type, and compatibility tests; analyze cells and morphology
• Review and perform quality controls, troubleshoot issues, and ensure accurate testing
• Maintain laboratory instruments, participate in proficiency testing, and analyze quality control data
• Prepare solutions, stains, reagents, and supplies for laboratory examinations
• Review reports, accession logs, and computer-generated data for accuracy and timely delivery
• Ensure optimal environmental conditions at the testing site (temperature, humidity, air circulation, sample suitability)
• Maintain professional knowledge through continuing education and staff meetings
• Prepare clear, accurate, and informative laboratory reports for patient care decisions
• Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture following safety and infection control protocols
• Educate patients and families on specimen collection and aftercare procedures
• Label specimen vials for proper identification and tracking
• Participate in departmental orientation, on-the-job training, and quality assurance initiatives
• Engage in ongoing educational programs to maintain current skills and competencies
• Uphold confidentiality, ethical standards, and deliver excellent customer service
• Perform other duties as assigned within the hospital laboratory
