Position Summary:
The Tax & Accounting Operations Manager will be responsible for managing daily firm operations related to tax preparation and accounting services. This individual will prepare and review tax returns, provide tax planning strategies to clients, oversee workflow, ensure deadlines are met, and support bookkeeping and accounting services.
The ideal candidate is highly experienced in individual and business taxation, possesses strong client communication skills, and is committed to delivering exceptional service while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Preparation & Compliance
• Prepare and file federal and state tax returns, including:
o Form 1040 Individual Returns
o Form 1065 Partnership Returns
o Form 1120 Corporate Returns
o Form 1120S S-Corporation Returns
o Form 1041 Trust & Estate Returns
o Form 941 Payroll Tax Returns
o Amended Returns
o State Tax Returns
• Ensure all returns are prepared accurately, timely, and in compliance with current tax laws.
• Review client documentation and identify missing information necessary for accurate return preparation.
• Research tax issues and develop solutions for complex tax situations.
• Stay current with federal and state tax law changes and best practices.
Client Advisory & Tax Planning (Certified Tax Advisor a +)
• Meet with clients to discuss tax-saving strategies and planning opportunities.
• Provide proactive guidance to individuals and business owners regarding tax implications of financial decisions.
• Communicate clearly and professionally regarding tax preparation status, findings, and recommendations.
• Build long-term relationships based on trust, expertise, and excellent client service.
Operations Management:
• Oversee day-to-day tax and accounting workflow.
• Manage tax season deadlines and prioritize projects to ensure timely completion.
• Improve operational processes and identify efficiencies within tax preparation and accounting procedures.
• Serve as a key point of contact for clients and internal team members.
• Maintain a client-first mindset in all interactions and decisions.
Accounting & Bookkeeping Support:
• Provide bookkeeping and accounting services for business clients during the off-season.
• Review financial records for accuracy and completeness.
• Assist clients with maintaining organized financial records and accounting processes.
Required Qualifications:
• CPA designation or Enrolled Agent (EA) credential preferred.
• Alternatively, active or renewable CTEC License and current PTIN.
• Minimum of 10 years of professional tax preparation experience.
• Extensive experience preparing individual, business, fiduciary, and payroll tax returns.
• Strong understanding of:
o Schedule A
o Schedule B
o Schedule C
o Schedule D
o Schedule E
• Experience preparing amended tax returns.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles and bookkeeping practices.
• Ability to perform comprehensive tax analysis and ask insightful fact-finding questions when information is incomplete.
• Experience researching complex tax issues using tax research tools, handbooks, and authoritative guidance.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and general business technology.
Preferred Qualifications
• Significant experience with Tax Software (currently using My Tax Prep Office).
• Ability to troubleshoot common software and tax processing issues.
• Experience managing client relationships and tax engagements independently.
• Experience working with small business owners and closely held businesses.
• Prior experience supervising staff or managing tax workflow.
