Senior Accountant
Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the Controller especially in following internal controls for all the Statement of Financial Position accounts, and reporting and analyzing the results on a monthly basis and for the overall management of all grants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Monitor all Statement of Financial Position work for compliance to internal controls
- Close and prepare and analyze timely the Statement of Financial Position
- Manage the restricted or designated funds received and their required financial reporting
- Maintain the capital campaign and pledges accounts
- Direct internal audits to ensure compliance with Internal Controls
- Provide technical support and advice on managerial accounting to assist director in making well-informed business decisions.
- Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
- Detect errors and suggest ways to improve efficiency and spending
- Produce error-free accounting reports and present their results
- Review and recommend modifications to accounting processes and procedures
- Participate in financial standards setting and in forecast process
- Provide input into department’s goal setting process
- Support month-end and year-end close process
- Ensure compliance with GAAP principles
Requirements
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar area of study
- Non-Profit experience preferred
- Proven experience as an Accounting Supervisor or Senior Accountant
- Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures
- In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Hands-on experience with Financial Edge
- Minimum five years of increasingly responsible professional experience in an Accounting/Finance Department, with strengths in the following areas:
Accounting systems management;
Fund accounting;
Bank and balance sheet reconciliations;
Month-end close;
Financial reporting;
Audit preparation;
Effective internal controls;
Staff supervision
COMPETENCIES:
- Advanced MS Excel skills including Vlookups and pivot tables
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills
- Identify and utilize relevant technology and tools to analyze data, efficiently and effectively perform assigned tasks as well as support other competencies.
