Health, Safety and Enviromental Specialist
Job Description
This individual will be responsible for overseeing health, safety, and environmental compliance across all operational locations in the region. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of DOT regulations, confined space entry, working at heights, lockout/tagout procedures, hazardous materials, and general industrial safety standards. This position plays a critical role in fostering a proactive safety culture and enabling the organization's ability to support hazardous materials (HazMat) response activities.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance & Training

Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other federal, state, and local regulations.

Develop and deliver training programs for confined space entry, fall protection, LOTO, and other key safety topics.

Maintain and monitor required permits and certifications for HAZMAT and environmental operations.
Program Development & Leadership

Lead the establishment and support of Safety Champions at all job sites and branches.

Create and implement digital safety tools (apps, forms, dashboards) for field use.

Continuously improve safety programs, policies, and procedures across the business unit.
Incident Management

Conduct incident and near-miss investigations; identify root causes and develop corrective actions.

Track and report safety metrics, trends, and leading indicators to management.

Partner with operations to implement risk mitigation strategies and job hazard analyses.
Environmental & HazMat Support

Support operational readiness for hazardous materials response and cleanup activities.

Coordinate compliance with federal and state environmental laws, including proper waste handling and spill response.

Maintain HazMat training records and ensure response equipment readiness.
Field Engagement & Oversight

Perform regular safety audits and field observations for job sites, yard operations, and over-the-road operations.

Collaborate with operations leaders to proactively identify and address safety issues.

Champion employee involvement and accountability in safety performance.
Qualifications
-
Associate or bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field (preferred).

3+ years of safety experience in industrial, construction, or environmental services industries.

In-depth knowledge of:
DOT regulations (FMCSA)
Confined space, fall protection, lockout/tagout, and hazmat protocols
OSHA 1910/1926 and EPA environmental standards -
Experience with incident investigation, digital safety platforms, and safety training development.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Ability to travel regionally (~30%) to support job sites and field teams.
