Job Summary
The Committee of Interns and Residents is looking for a Lead New Organizer located on the West Coast. CIR is committed to supporting our organizing initiatives. The Lead New Organizer must utilize the resources of CIR’s departments to strengthen and guide a successful organizing campaign. This position is responsible for leading organizers and organizing committees in executing the campaign plan and facilitating the learning and development of new organizers. This position is responsible for successfully leading all aspects of an organizing campaign located anywhere in the United States.

What You’ll Do

  • Probe potential CIR chapters, and identify and recruit leaders to an organizing committee.
  • Build relationships with interns, residents, fellows, and allies while maintaining oversight of new organizing campaigns.
  • Successfully lead the execution of a campaign plan.
  • Identify needs and utilize campaign tools to move campaigns effectively and efficiently.
  • Develop new organizers and effectively guide their day-to-day work.
  • Conduct broad and intensive outreach
  • Build one-on-one relationships, and identify, recruit and develop leaders
  • Conduct individual and group meetings to move organizing campaigns forward
  • Engage, motivate and mobilize physicians-in-training to take action
  • Manage expectations, fears, and hopes of residents throughout the campaign.
  • Plan and implement actions and events to support organizing efforts
  • Comprehend resident work life, training, governance structures, terminology, and role within hospital operations.
  • Collaborate with other CIR departments (Communications, Political, Legal, Research, Contract) to strengthen and guide campaigns.
  • Be well versed in labor law specifically related to regulations governing union recognition.
  • Perform basic campaign research, including probing, list building and worksite mapping
  • Facilitate meetings effectively.
  • Engage with physicians-in-training directly on issues related to quality improvement, health disparities and better working conditions
  • Develop skills in public speaking, health care economics, strategic research, and campaign execution

What Makes A Great Candidate

  • Experience leading a team/s in a campaign setting.
  • 2-year minimum experience in external organizing.
  • Experience in tracking and analyzing data for campaigns.
  • Ability to use, learn and teach different organizing tools in campaigns.
  • Proficiency in job-related technical knowledge and ability to facilitate the learning of others.
  • Ability to develop committees.
  • Ability to think critically through problems, manage conflict and adversarial situations.
  • Recognizable interest in the work and the membership with a desire to advance the organization.
  • Proactively identifies the needs of the organization and responds with solutions.
  • Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple responsibilities and handle fast-paced settings, multiple projects, and tight deadlines.
  • Critically evaluate one’s own performance, incorporating feedback into improving performance.
  • Ability to self-motivate and accomplish work independently.
  • Motivated to develop one’s own skills, acquire knowledge & proactively seek opportunities to learn.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Well-prepared, organized, and able to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to work long hours and travel extensively within the United States.
  • Residence in one of the following states strongly preferred: California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington.
  • Familiarity with statistics, quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • 4-year degree (BA/BS) preferred
  • Must have a driver’s license
  • Must be fully vaccinated for Covid in accordance with CDC guidelines, subject to any laws of the state in which the applicant resides.

CIR Offers
Competitive salary ($111,634 – $134,923) commensurate with experience and in compliance with the staff collective bargaining agreement. Excellent benefits package including health, dental, and vision coverage with no employee contributions; generous paid leave time including four weeks’ vacation within the first calendar year of employment, paid holidays, personal days, and sick days; short and long-term disability insurance; 401(k); defined benefit pension plan; and mileage reimbursement.
