- Operate other heavy equipment and perform general labor duties (such as shoveling or raking) as needed to support the paving and restoration crew.
- Guide portable compactors or hand tampers over areas inaccessible to the primary roller.
- Restoration Focus:
- Work closely with the restoration crew on utility cuts, trench repairs, patchwork, and other small-to-medium-scale paving projects to restore surfaces to pre-existing conditions or better.
- Coordinate rolling patterns and timing with the paving and tack crew to maintain the mat temperature and quality during the compaction process.
- Safety & Maintenance:
- Perform thorough daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and maintenance checks on the roller and other assigned equipment (fluids, damage, wear areas, etc.).
- Report any equipment malfunctions, damage, or required repairs to the Foreman/Mechanic immediately.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and relevant traffic regulations while on the job site.
- Teamwork & Administration:
- Follow directions from the Foreman or Superintendent regarding daily tasks, project specifications, and work priorities.
- Collaborate with all crew members to maintain a productive, clean, and safe work environment.
- Complete accurate equipment usage logs, daily reports, and safety documentation.
- Load and secure equipment onto transport trailers as required.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Experience:
- Minimum of 1-3 years of proven experience operating asphalt rollers, including static, vibratory, and pneumatic models.
- Knowledge of compaction techniques, HMA characteristics, and various rolling patterns.
- Experience working in a construction, paving, or civil infrastructure environment is strongly preferred.
- License/Certifications:
- Valid Driver's License (Class D or equivalent) with a clean driving record is required.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A is strongly preferred. (Required to haul heavy equipment to and from job sites).
- Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and precision to achieve a smooth and high-quality finished surface.
- Mechanical aptitude for performing routine maintenance and inspections.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work extended hours, including nights and weekends, and travel to various work sites in all weather conditions.
- Physical Demands:
- Must be able to sit for extended periods while operating equipment.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds frequently.
