A Level 4 Wastewater Operator manages complex treatment processes and often supervises lower-level operators. They ensure compliance with all EPA, state, and local environmental regulations , maintaining the safety and efficiency of wastewater treatment systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate and optimize advanced treatment systems (biological, chemical, filtration, disinfection, etc.)
• Perform and interpret lab tests to monitor water quality
• Adjust chemical dosing, flow rates, and aeration processes
• Oversee plant maintenance and troubleshooting of mechanical/electrical systems
• Maintain logs, records, and reports required by regulatory agencies
• Train and supervise junior operators (Levels 1–3)
• Respond to system alarms, emergencies, or compliance issues

Typical Requirements

• Level 3 certification and several years of documented operating experience
• Successful completion of the Grade 4 exam (state-specific)
• Strong knowledge of:
• • Activated sludge and advanced treatment methods
  • SCADA and instrumentation systems
  • Regulatory sampling and reporting standards
• High school diploma or GED (some facilities prefer an associate’s or bachelor’s in environmental science, chemistry, or engineering)
