Position Summary:
The Chef is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious, balanced meals in accordance with Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS) and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards. This position plays a critical role in supporting the health and recovery of individuals in residential mental health and substance use disorder treatment by ensuring food safety, quality, and therapeutic dietary compliance.
Key Responsibilities: Meal Preparation & ServicePlan and prepare well-balanced, appealing meals that meet nutritional guidelines and support client recovery
Ensure portion control and accommodate special dietary needs, allergies, and restrictions as directed by clinical staff or dietitians
Maintain a consistent meal schedule with timely service for all required meals and snacks
Rotate menus on a weekly or monthly basis and incorporate client feedback, when appropriate
Follow all AZDHS and TJC food safety and sanitation standards
Maintain clean, organized, and compliant kitchen, food storage, and prep areas
Ensure proper food handling, labeling, refrigeration, and storage procedures
Maintain logs for refrigerator/freezer temperatures, cleaning schedules, and food inventory
Participate in facility inspections and implement corrective actions as required
Order, receive, and store food and kitchen supplies according to proper standards
Maintain inventory control and minimize food waste
Track and document supply usage and costs for reporting to management
Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff regarding dietary plans, allergy protocols, and nutrition-related needs
Participate in staff meetings and quality assurance initiatives when requested
Maintain accurate records of meals served, dietary accommodations, and compliance reports
Notify management of any supply shortages, equipment issues, or safety concerns
High school diploma or GED
At least 1 year of experience in a commercial kitchen or institutional food service setting (preferably in a healthcare or residential facility)
Valid Arizona Food Handler’s Certification (required)
Knowledge of therapeutic diets, including low-sodium, diabetic, and vegetarian options
Familiarity with AZDHS Bureau of Residential Facilities Licensing food service standards
Understanding of The Joint Commission’s Environment of Care and Food/Nutrition Services standards
Ability to read and follow recipes and standardized portion guidelines
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Ability to communicate effectively with staff and residents in a professional and respectful manner
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check
ServSafe Manager Certification or equivalent
Previous experience in behavioral health, addiction recovery, or healthcare-related food service
CPR/First Aid certification
Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a hot kitchen environment
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs, bend, stoop, reach, and carry kitchen items
Manual dexterity and the ability to operate commercial kitchen equipment
Reasonable accommodations will be made in accordance with ADA requirements
Residential treatment center kitchen environment
Exposure to heat, cold, steam, and cleaning chemicals
Interaction with staff and residents in a professional healthcare setting
Monday 0730 am - 530 pm
Tuesday 1100 am - 630 pm
Wednesday 1100 am - 630 pm
