Job Summary
Manages and oversees day-to-day field operations on underground utility projects. This includes supervising crews, coordinating schedules, enforcing safety standards, and ensuring all work meets project specifications, timelines, and quality requirements. Serves as the key link between field operations, project managers, and clients, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and with integrity.
Pre-Construction
- Familiar with construction management including scheduling and cost control
- Proficient in understanding building/engineering plans and specifications
- Value engineering experience
- Work with the Project Manager in presentation and proposal preparations
- Work with the Project Manager to review the plans and specifications for constructability and construction schedules and advise the project team of issues or deficiencies.
- Participate in the constructability review with the Project Manager.
- Participate in determining sequence and activity duration on schedules for proposed projects.
- Provide technical expertise throughout the pre-construction process.
- Be involved along with the Project Manager in the creation of the estimate and budget preparation.
- Understand the contract between GC and the owner.
- Understand the projects budget.
- Understand trade contractor and supplier contract scopes.
- Assist the Project Manager in the management of the pre-construction schedule.
Crew Building & Mentoring
- Team player with crew/field supervision, project management, and company administration staff.
- Recruit, manage, and train foremen in all aspects of their jobs.
- Ability to manage multiple crews at the same time.
- Coordinate all construction crews, services, and activities.
- Mentor and train other foreman and other employees as necessary.
Safety & Training
- Safety standards knowledge and enforcement.
- Ensure job safety requirements are understood and implemented by all project personnel and trade contractors, working with the Safety Manager as a resource. Continually strives for zero injuries on all projects.
- Watch for and correct all safety hazards at the jobsite. Report all safety incidents to the Safety Manager.
- Responsibility to ensure that required on-site safety meetings are held and documented.
- Manage foremen and crew training ensuring all required training is always up to date.
Field Supervision
- Understand and communicate to all field personnel the owners goals regarding construction.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective under time pressure situations.
- Self-starter with ability to set goals and tasks with strong leadership skills.
- Problem solving and critical thinking skills application to construction management, team management, and client relations.
- Maintains positive relationships with the owner and engineer/general contractor throughout the project(s).
- Provide technical expertise throughout the construction process.
- Work with the Project Manager to prepare, manage, and update the detailed project schedule with sequence and activity duration including procurement items.
- In coordination with the Project Manager, maintain strict build schedule and make changes as necessary to make sure all deadlines are met.
- Schedules and procures tools and equipment necessary for the project.
- Understand project budgets and costs and be able to manage projects within budgets and on schedule.
- Coordinate equipment needs and utilization to effectively schedule and use company resources.
Field Documentation
- Responsible for accuracy of the daily job logs.
- Responsible for accuracy and timeliness of labor reporting for crews.
- Responsible for accuracy and timeliness of equipment reporting on jobs.
- Establish the punch list process and close-out procedures with the project manager, owner, and engineer/general contractor before trade contractor work starts.
- Work cooperatively with general contractors and subcontractors.
- Ability to compile cost to complete estimates and projected costs.
- Wear required PPE
- Adhere to B&F Code of Conduct
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent education
- 5+ years of experience in underground utility or heavy civil construction, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role
- Competent Person certification
- Strong knowledge of underground utility systems (water, sewer, storm, electrical, telecom)
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and blueprints
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Problem-solving ability to address field challenges quickly and effectively
- Proficient in construction management documentation and project management software
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple crews/projects at once
- Valid driver license and clean driving record
- Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug tests
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus
