Industrial Utilities and Wastewater Operations Technician
Step into a day running the heartbeat of our plant
Your shift begins at the utilities hub. You check steam boilers warming up smoothly, glance at SCADA trends for glycol chillers and cooling towers, listen for healthy cycles on air compressors, and confirm nitrogen generation and CO2 recovery are on spec. You verify multiple reverse osmosis units are producing quality water and that aquifer injection wells and the wastewater treatment plant are stable and compliant. From there, the day unfolds with smart diagnostics, hands-on maintenance, and close collaboration across brewing and production to keep everything safe, efficient, and within permit limits.
What you will handle
- Operate, monitor, maintain, and repair plant utilities: steam boilers, glycol chillers, cooling towers, air compressors, nitrogen generation, CO2 recovery, multiple RO units, wastewater treatment, and aquifer injection wells.
- Analyze mechanical, electrical, chemical, and biological data; make adjustments to sustain continuous, cost-effective performance within equipment specifications and state discharge permit limits.
- Lead corrective actions during outages, breakdowns, large spills, or dumps at the wastewater plant to maintain operations.
- Perform both basic and advanced laboratory tests; conduct routine and non-routine analysis of the waste stream, boiler treatment chemicals, well water quality, and filtration equipment.
- Execute routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance; troubleshoot effectively to minimize unplanned downtime and apply root-cause problem solving for durable fixes and improvements.
Documentation and handoffs
- Record all maintenance activities, work performed, and parts consumed with clear notes and observations.
- Complete PMs and work orders before leaving the plant; coordinate follow-up with the incoming shift to ensure continuity.
- Assist the lead in creating and updating SOPs.
Communication and collaboration
- Partner with brewing and other departments to plan maintenance with minimal production disruption; communicate status and needs proactively.
- Enable smooth shift changes by sharing in-progress work, equipment status, and open issues; escalate concerns to your supervisor related to safety, quality, performance, productivity, continuous improvement, and team harmony.
Inventory and tools
- Locate parts using the CMMS and follow inventory control procedures to document usage accurately.
- Optimize the use of tools, spares, and equipment to reduce waste and improve reliability.
Training and improvement
- Share specialist technical knowledge with peers and teammates.
- Partner with leadership on continuous improvement initiatives, utility or facility upgrades, and permanent corrective measures for recurring issues.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- 1–3 years of experience with chillers/boilers, CO2 recovery, and RO systems; or 1–3 years of laboratory and/or operational experience in aerobic and/or anaerobic wastewater treatment (industrial setting preferred).
- Understanding of wastewater plant operations, sludge processing/handling, chemistry, microbiology, and analytical lab instruments.
- Broad knowledge across mathematics, mechanics, chemistry, biology, microbiology, electrical and control systems, maintenance practices, and safety procedures.
- Competence with aerobic/anaerobic WWTP processes: pumping stations, control systems, screening, grit removal, clarification, pH and nutrient control via chemical addition, sludge press, and anaerobic pre-treatment.
- Experienced handling hazardous chemicals.
- Hands-on with pumps, motors, compressors, boilers, valves, PRVs, and SCADA systems.
- Computer skills: MS Office (Excel, Word), email, and CMMS proficiency.
- Clear written and verbal communication.
What makes you successful here
- Composed under pressure while living our values.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to tackle any task.
- Reliable and punctual; follows attendance guidelines.
- Thrives in a fast-paced setting; prioritizes and multitasks effectively.
- Excellent communicator, spoken and written.
- Maintains a positive, "can-do" mindset and seeks feedback.
- Collaborative across teams; adapts communication and leadership style to the situation.
- Owns results and behaviors—personally and as a team member.
Work environment
- Exposure to industrial hazards including high noise, physical obstacles, and chemicals.
- Occasional outdoor work for short periods; subject to extreme heat/cold.
- Stamina to perform tasks over extended periods in a dynamic environment.
- Lift up to 50 lbs; stand/move 8–12 hours; climb/descend stairs and ladders.
- Fine motor skills and manual dexterity required.
- PPE required: bump cap, safety steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, dust masks or PAPRs.
- Must follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
Schedule
- 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 rotation in a two-week cycle, including every other weekend and holidays.
