We’re seeking a talented and versatile early career reporter for an 18-month fellowship covering Indigenous affairs on the U.S. News team. Reporting to the Mountain West assistant news director, you will produce multiformat, nuanced storytelling that centers Indigenous voices and adds new and underrepresented perspectives to the AP report. Our ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of tribal sovereignty and the trust responsibility of the U.S. government, and a proven ability to cultivate sources to break news and produce enterprise for digital audiences.
You will work across a range of topics that include health, education, criminal justice, politics, and climate and environment, ensuring stories resonate around the world.
Responsibilities : As an AP reporter, you will collaborate with diverse teams of journalists in text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics. The position may involve occasional travel, and the successful candidate should be prepared to leave on short notice as news needs arise. You also should be able and willing to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, as AP is a 24/7 operation. This temporary staff position lasts through June 2027 and is covered by the AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has great news sense, with the ability to communicate complicated stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms.
- Is never at a loss for story ideas and will pursue distinctive and inclusive threads while maintaining AP’s standards for ethics, integrity and objectivity.
- Likes to work collaboratively as part of a team of journalists, reporters and editors.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in another language is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications: A track record of covering distinctive stories with Indigenous communities and breaking news is preferred. You should have excellent interpersonal skills and be eager to learn from mentors across the organization. You should have strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver on complex, challenging story lines.
We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role. We’re looking for a reporter to be based in a city in the Mountain West, including Albuquerque, NM; Phoenix; Denver; Billings, MT; or Cheyenne, WY.
The application period will expire at 11:59pm on September 2, 2025.
