Position Highlights

The Udall Center at the University of Arizona is in search of a Training and Outreach Facilitator. This position coordinates training and customized facilitated outreach projects and activities in the Native Nations Institute’s (NNI) Indigenous Governance and Direct Services (IGDS) program. Working under the direction of the NNI IGDS Manager, and in close collaboration with the NNI researchers, the incumbent will act as a co-planner and co-facilitator as needed to fulfill the scope of work on various training and outreach projects.

The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational, multitasking, and communication skills. This role requires the ability to work independently and maintain a high level of professionalism with minimal supervision, while accepting moderate guidance on select projects as needed. The position involves frequent travel to offsite locations, both in-state and out-of-state, as well as occasional weekend commitments, requiring flexibility in scheduling and availability. This is an in-person role based in Tucson, AZ .

Native Nations Institute was founded in 2001 by the University of Arizona and Udall Foundation as a self-determination, governance, and development resource for Indigenous nations. A program of the university's Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy, NNI works with Indigenous nations and organizations to support Indigenous self-determination, strengthen Indigenous governance capacities, and achieve community and economic development objectives. It does this through practical research, educational programs, and hands-on collaboration designed to assist Indigenous peoples in (re)building their nations according to their own designs. The NNI Educational Services program provides outreach and educational services to Indigenous nations and communities and to non-Native entities who work with Indigenous peoples, including University of Arizona programs, that inquire and/or request educational seminars, facilitation, and strategic planning support.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Native Nations Institute Training and Outreach Facilitator assists the NNI IGDS Team in fulfilling NNI’s commitments for Indigenous Policy and Native Nation Building by conducting the following duties, as assigned:

  • Coordinate and/or oversees assigned NNI IGDS projects, including: seminars, workshops, meetings, and other projects as necessary, under the direction of the Manager, to ensure that specified goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with established priorities, time limitations, funding limitations, and/or other specifications while ensuring adherence to University policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate internal U of A activities with interrelated activities of NNI, the Udall Center, and other University staff, departments.
  • Draft agendas.
  • Coordinate and/or draft presentation materials.
  • Coordinate with colleagues, scheduling of fulfillment activities (seminars, presentations, etc.); recruitment; support for cohort programs.
  • Draft summary report.
  • Monitor expenditures in accordance with budget.
  • Assist in reporting program activities and records.
  • Prepare special reports on projects, progress, and status for internal program management, as requested by Manager.
  • Facilitate NNI IGDS programs/projects as assigned.
  • Assist in drafting content as assigned or in collaboration with the IGDS team.
  • Participate in training on “Native Nation Building” materials and in facilitation methods through reading, videos, workshops, and practical teaching/facilitation opportunities.
  • Participate in meetings and conferences pertinent to area of responsibility as directed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled in working with American Indian, Alaska Natives, or other Indigenous groups, communities, leaders, programs and/or other Indigenous endeavors.
  • Skilled with advanced computer applications in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google applications, and internet-based meeting platforms.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Skilled in public speaking to small and/or large audiences.
  • Skilled in organizing work of self and others.
  • Knowledge of and skilled in managing tasks and assignments from a variety of sources.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to solicit and manage input from various individuals.
  • Ability to gain proficiency in virtual engagement apps and tools.
  • Knowledge of grant proposals.
  • Working knowledge of contemporary Indigenous nations and their governance and history.
  • Working knowledge of the research findings of the Native Nations Institute (U of A) and Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in conducting information gathering on topic issues/challenges and producing/presenting informational materials.
  • Experience with all aspects of grant proposals.
