Operating Engineer
MalaceHR is seeking an experienced Operating Engineer to support the maintenance and operation of a commercial facility. This role is responsible for operating, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining building systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong HVAC background, be EPA certified, and possess broad mechanical knowledge across multiple building trades.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on professional who enjoys working independently while supporting a high-performing facilities maintenance team.
Schedule
- Monday – Friday
- 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
- Limited overtime available
- Participation in an on-call rotation is required:
- Every 4 weeks while staffing levels are developing
- Approximately every 6 weeks when fully staffed
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial building mechanical systems.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire/life safety, structural, and control systems.
- Inspect, clean, calibrate, and repair HVAC equipment to maintain peak operating performance.
- Monitor equipment performance by recording operational readings and making necessary adjustments.
- Diagnose equipment failures and implement effective repairs to minimize downtime.
- Complete preventive maintenance tasks according to established schedules.
- Assist with plumbing and electrical repairs as needed.
- Monitor and inspect work performed by outside contractors to ensure quality standards are met.
- Maintain maintenance records, work orders, and equipment documentation.
- Maintain inventory of tools and assist with parts and material management.
- Follow all OSHA, company, and client safety procedures.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
- Identify potential safety hazards and recommend corrective actions.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- 5–10 years of commercial or industrial building maintenance experience.
- EPA Section 608 Certification (Universal preferred; required certification must be current).
- Strong experience servicing commercial HVAC systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and building systems.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and respond effectively during on-call assignments.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical maintenance activities including climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, and working in mechanical spaces.
Preferred
- Forklift Certification.
- Commercial plumbing experience.
- Commercial electrical maintenance experience.
- Trade school education in HVAC, electrical, or mechanical systems.
- Experience working with building automation systems (BAS).
