Job Summary
Wise Care Counts, LLC (WCC) is seeking qualified Contract Attorneys to support a federal legal services program for the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits (PSOB) Program.
Attorneys will provide legal review, analysis, and adjudicative support involving death and disability claims submitted under the PSOB Act. This work directly supports benefits determinations for public safety officers and their families. This is a fully remote U.S.-based position supporting a federal government contract.
This role supports legal and administrative case management activities involving federal death, disability, and educational assistance claims. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with experience reviewing legal and/or medical documentation, supporting claims or case management workflows, and interacting professionally with individuals experiencing traumatic or sensitive circumstances.
This is a fast-paced environment requiring exceptional attention to detail, sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to manage high-volume workloads while meeting strict timelines.
Work Environment
- Remote/home office within the United States
- Secure and private workspace required
- Standard business hours aligned with Eastern Time operations
- Occasional travel or attendance at government meetings may be required
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review and analyze claims documentation, supporting evidence, medical records, and legal materials
Conduct legal review and analysis of administrative claims and evidentiary records - Interpret and apply federal statutes, regulations, and agency policies
- Draft legal memoranda, recommendations, determinations, correspondence, subpoenas, and requests for information
- Review and analyze complex administrative records, including medical and employment documentation
- Provide written legal analysis regarding procedural and substantive claim issues
- Support multiple levels of administrative adjudication and appeals
- Maintain accurate workload and timekeeping documentation
- Handle sensitive and personally identifiable information in compliance with DOJ security requirements
- Work collaboratively with government legal counsel, hearing officers, paralegals, and project management staff
Preferred Qualifications
- Federal administrative law experience
- DOJ or other federal agency support experience
- Experience reviewing disability, benefits, employment, workers’ compensation, or public safety claims
- Strong legal research and legal writing skills
- Experience handling high-volume document review or adjudicative casework
- Familiarity with trauma-informed communications and sensitive case handling
Education and Experience
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Active bar membership in good standing in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
- U.S. citizenship or legal residency meeting DOJ residency requirements
- Ability to successfully complete a federal background investigation (Moderate Risk Public Trust)
- Experience Requirements
- Contract Attorney I: Minimum two (2) years post-JD legal practice experience
Contract Attorney II: Minimum four (4) years post-JD legal practice experience
Contract Attorney III: Minimum six (6) years post-JD legal practice experience - Qualifying experience must include legal practice in a law office or government setting after bar admission.
