Automation and Controls Manager

Automation and Controls Manager

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Automation and Controls Manager to lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of automation systems across our manufacturing operations. The role is responsible for managing PLC/SCADA/HMI development, coordinating with production, engineering and IT, ensuring reliable and safe automated processes, and delivering projects on schedule and budget. The ideal candidate has strong manufacturing automation experience, hands-on expertise with Siemens PLCs and industrial controls, and familiarity with ERP integration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor and develop a cross-functional automation and controls team, including engineers, technicians and contractors.
  • Manage the full lifecycle of automation projects: requirements definition, design, programming, integration, commissioning and handover.
  • Design, program and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs and SCADA systems with a focus on Siemens platforms (e.g., SIMATIC S7, TIA Portal) and other industry-standard controllers.
  • Partner with manufacturing, maintenance and engineering to define control strategies that improve safety, quality, throughput and OEE.
  • Coordinate ERP and MES integrations to ensure reliable data exchange between control systems and business systems.
  • Establish and enforce standards, documentation practices, and version control for control system software and electrical drawings.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, vendor relationships and procurement for automation hardware and software.
  • Implement robust machine and process safety systems, perform risk assessments (e.g., PHA/LOPA), and ensure compliance with relevant safety and regulatory standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using data from control systems, commissioning results and root cause analyses.
  • Oversee spare parts strategy, preventive maintenance for control components and lifecycle planning for obsolete systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, Automation or related engineering field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in industrial automation and controls, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Hands-on experience programming, commissioning and troubleshooting PLCs and HMIs, with proven expertise on Siemens platforms (SIMATIC S7, TIA Portal).
  • Practical knowledge of industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus), SCADA systems, and fieldbus protocols.
  • Experience integrating automation systems with ERP/MES environments and familiarity with common ERP workflows in manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, manufacturing operations, and continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma desirable).
  • Proven project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling and vendor management; PMP or equivalent is a plus.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills, able to translate technical issues to business impacts.
  • Knowledge of electrical schematics, control panels, and experience with safety standards and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Willingness to support shift work or after-hours commissioning as required.
