Coordinator of Safe Environment Training

Purpose and Scope

To support the Diocese of Phoenix in its mission to Encounter the Living Christ, this position supports with all components of the Diocesan Safe Environment Training (SET) program under the direction of the Director of Protection and Empowerment, and in accordance with the requirements set forth within the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People promulgated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

• Assists the Diocese of Phoenix, its parishes, missions, schools, and related organizations in the training of the Policy and Procedures for the Protection of Minors through supporting parish and school leadership throughout all geographical areas of the Diocese, answering questions, designing implementation protocol and tracking systems, and reviewing policy standards with each location annually.

• In collaboration with the Director, develops and ensures the implementation of new educational materials related to maintaining a Safe Environment, with an additional emphasis on Catholic schools, multicultural diversity, and individuals with disabilities.

• Provides customer service support to employees and volunteers of the Diocese to ensure that SET training is completed and serves as a professional resource to parishes, schools, and other Safe Environment coordinators, to assist with developing individualized protocols and ongoing training.

• Executes regular site audits ensuring each Diocesan location is in program compliance with the Diocesan Policy and Procedures for the Protection of Minors.

• Acts as a community liaison along with the Director of Protection and Empowerment.

• Functions as a trainer for Safe Environment and renewal foundation trainings.

• Annually assists in reviewing and proposes updates to the Safe Environment Policy and Procedures for the Protection of Minors

• In tandem with the Director of the Office of Child and Youth Protection, collaborates with the Catholic Schools Office.

• Provides ongoing education on Safe Environment procedures through the website, periodic updates, and other avenues.

• When deficiencies are identified, assures compliance with applicable policies, requirements and regulations so the deficiencies are corrected.

• Manages the compliance database and ensures data collection is maintained for annual audit.

• Identifies participants who are registered sex offenders by reviewing database reports.

Additional Job Functions

Performs any job-related tasks as directed by the supervisor.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

• Maintains the confidentiality of the Safe Environment Office at all times.

• Ability to understand the USCCB Charter and its applications for the Diocese.

• Ability to work with pastors, principals, employees, and volunteers and respond to questions regarding the application of the Policy and Code of Ethics.

• Curriculum development and utilizing different modalities of delivery.

• Ability to work under pressure, take initiative, be creative and forecast, plan and implement future training programs.

• Understanding of the Catholic Church and its ministerial obligations.

• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to give large group presentations and prepare reports.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective work relationships with diverse ethnic cultures.

• Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

• Valid AZ driver’s license and the ability to travel throughout the Diocese.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel, and Access.

• Fluency in Spanish highly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

• Active, practicing, Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.

• Able to articulate a clear understanding of the Catholic faith and to serve as a committed witness to its mission.

• Bachelor’s Degree (emphasis in areas such as social and behavioral sciences, education and teaching, health and wellness, and interdisciplinary studies are strongly recommended)

• Three years working experience in a related professional position.

Work Environment

• This job operates in a professional office environment.

• This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

• This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand, as necessary.
