Position Overview

About the Position
The primary role of the Special Education teacher is to support students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP). This person serves as the primary contact for parents and teachers and is responsible for maintaining up-to-date IEPs and METs.

The teacher collaborates with general education teachers to provide the necessary support to students both in and out of the general education environment. A key responsibility is building a professional relationship with parents to accurately report academic and behavioral progress for individual students.

This role reports to the site principal and the SPED leadership team. Certified Special Education teachers should have experience differentiating instruction for a variety of learners and will work collaboratively with a team to plan and support instruction aligned with IEP goals.

Education

• Master’s degree in Special Education

Experience

• Three or more years of previous teaching experience

Other Requirements

• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card by the time of hire

• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Arizona Teaching Certificate by the time of hire

Preferred Requirements

• Four years of teaching experience

• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Arizona Special Education Teaching Certificate

• Work with teaching staff to ensure compliance with Individual Education Plans

• Present a positive role model for students, supporting the school’s mission through professional, ethical, and responsible behavior

• Utilize a variety of instructional methods in individual, group, and online settings

• Communicate with students to encourage course completion and academic success

• Encourage and track student attendance

• Manage academic and behavioral needs of students

• Provide student tutoring in certified subject areas

• Work collaboratively within teams

• Attend IEP meetings; participate in staff development, faculty events, meetings, and serve on committees as required (e.g., teacher in-service days)

• Complete additional tasks as assigned by supervisors

• Utilize student information systems (e.g., PowerSchool), learning management systems, and IEP platforms

• Direct, monitor, and mentor paraprofessionals working with students who have disabilities or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

• Perform various assessments and observations to identify areas where students may need modified educational services (e.g., academic performance, behavior, social development, physical health)

• Develop and teach lessons that provide engaging learning opportunities for small groups or individual students while adhering to IEP and 504 plan specifications

• Work primarily occurs in a classroom setting

• Frequent use of computers with repetitive functions

• Constant interruptions in a high-volume work environment

• Requires handling multiple tasks, frequently changing tasks, and time-sensitive responsibilities

• Extensive contact with the public via telephone, email, and in person

• Requires the ability to sit for 50% of the time, walk for 25%, and stand for 25%

• The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment

Education

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Education

Experience

• 4 years of Special Education teaching experience

• 3 years of general teaching experience

Licenses & Certifications

• IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (Required)
