Faculty Position: Computational Immunology Investigators

Mayo Clinic
Phoenix, AZ

Responsibilities

This position may be located in Rochester, MN, Jacksonville, FL or Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ

Position Description
The Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center invite applications for open-rank faculty positions in Computational Immunology with strong leadership potential and a commitment to translating cutting-edge cancer research into clinical impact. Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center (MCCCC) have built a world-class research hub - including a very strong artificial intelligence (AI) program focused on virtual cell and organ modeling, digital twins, and AI-based discovery, and, a very strong on premises and cloud-based computational sciences program - dedicated to transforming cancer patient care through target discovery, innovative therapeutic strategies and next-generation immunotherapies. MCCCC has a very strong track record of translation of discoveries to human interventions and clinical trials.

We seek outstanding investigators who will provide scientific leadership in the development and application of computational approaches and modeling to understand the complex interaction between tumors, the immune system, tumor spatial ecotypes and microenvironments, and targeted therapeutic interventions. The successful candidates will lead efforts to integrate and interpret multimodal datasets, including single cell and spatial multi-omics, immune repertoire profiling, functional genomics screens, imaging, proteomics, clinical and longitudinal patient data. The overarching goal is to identify and generate actionable insights that accelerate the development of effective cancer immunotherapies. Successful applicants will house their program at one of the three Mayo Clinic Destination Medical Center Sites in Rochester, Minnesota; Jacksonville, Florida; or Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ, but have the opportunity to work across the Mayo Clinic enterprise.

Strategic Role and Leadership Expectations
The Computational Immunology Investigators will:

  • Lead computational immunology and single-cell analytics initiatives across basic science, translational research, and clinical programs.
  • Develop and implement computational research workflows (including virtual/digital models) to ensure reproducibility, scalability, and best practices in analysis of cancer cell: immune cell interaction and tissue microenvironments.
  • Define scientific strategies related to immune receptor (TCR/BCR) repertoire sequencing and analysis (bulk and single-cell), including clonotype definition, repertoire diversity, and clonal expansion/dynamics, and integration with single-cell RNA-seq, multi-omics, and machine learning to link clonality with cellular state and patient outcomes.
  • Serve as a senior scientific advisor to translational programs, biotechnology collaborations, and startup partnerships.
  • Sustain an independent, externally funded research program in computational immunology or cancer immunology.
  • Translate computational discoveries into clinically meaningful insights, biomarkers, and therapeutic strategies. Lead the design, development, and dissemination of computational tools and open-source software for immune profiling and single-cell analysis.
  • Oversee analytical pipelines for immune receptor repertoire analysis, including V(D)J annotation, clonotype assignment, repertoire diversity metrics, clonal tracking across time/tissue, and (for BCR) somatic hypermutation and lineage/phylogeny, alongside trajectory inference and multi-omic modeling.
  • Partners with Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center investigators and industry collaborators who translate these discoveries to human interventions and clinical trials.
  • Support interpretation of immune profiling data from clinical trials, patient cohorts, and experimental models.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary grant applications and consortia.

The successful candidates will provide scientific leadership in computational immunology, that accelerates discovery and translation into clinically meaningful insights, biomarkers, and therapeutics strategies.

Research Environment

Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center offer a highly collaborative and integrated academic medical center environment with expanding strengths in computational biology, AI-driven discovery, cell therapy, cancer immunotherapy, regenerative medicine, and translational science. Faculty benefit from:

  • Established CAR-T and immune therapy programs with active clinical translation
  • State-of-the-art genome engineering and cell manufacturing infrastructure
  • Access to institutional core facilities including genomics, single-cell sequencing, proteomics, bioinformatics, and advanced imaging
  • A very strong AI-driven discovery program with exceptional “on prem” and cloud-based computational resources
  • Mayo Clinic Platform which holds the fully digitized longitudinal patient records from 15M Mayo Clinic patients and 54M patients with collaborating healthcare institutions from across the nation and the globe
  • A strong focus on translating first-in-human trials to bring new treatments to patients
  • Dedicated institutional support for regulatory strategy, clinical trial development, and commercialization pathways
  • A growing biotechnology corridor that attracts partner companies to accelerate translation of discoveries

The successful candidate will be a key driver in integrating advanced genome engineering technologies into existing and emerging cell therapy platforms, enabling novel approaches to immune cell engineering, stem cell modification, in vivo gene editing strategies, and precision genome correction programs.

Why Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center?
