Position: Sr. CaptainDepartment: Passenger Ferry
Salary range: Commensurate with experience Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of this position is to oversee the operation and safety of vessel, crew and guests. The Sr. Captain will work with the Resort General Manager to ensure the highest level of passenger guest service and safety. The Sr. Captain will direct passenger vessel personnel in the safe and efficient operations of the Havasu Landing Resort passenger vessels by performing the following duties below personally or through subordinate Captains and crew. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establish operational procedures for activities such as, observing USCG procedures, navigating the boats and ongoing safety/firefighting/man-overboard drills.
- Maintain a working knowledge of all laws pertaining to marine transportation.
- Confer with representatives of management to formulate polices, determine need for programs and coordinate programs with Havasu Landing Resort activities.
- Confer with representatives of local governments to ensure cooperation and coordination of transportation activities with law enforcement, firefighting and emergency agencies.
- Train and set standards for vessel captains and deckhands.
- Prepare manual for standard operating procedures to include safety and general operations.
- Monitor procedures and recommend changes of the manual to management.
- Maintain order and guest safety on the boats.
- Report mechanical problems to the Resort General Manager and Maintenance Department
- Help to schedule regular maintenance and cleaning of vessels.
- Ensure vessels are ready for USCG inspections and keep records of those inspections.
- Other responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training officers, crew and other employees, planning assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining officers and crew, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Administer employee scheduling and pay through payroll program.
- Oversee daily ticketing and accounting activities.
- Maintain the vessel budget and help maximize cost efficiency as directed.
- Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintaining instructions and procedure manuals.
- Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, verify facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Flexible and able to change schedule as required by weather and other factors.
- Must have the ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in verbal, written, oral, mathematical and diagram from.
- Prepares the vessel for and attends all USCG annual inspections and drydocks, as required.
- Oversee all drug and alcohol testing as required per USCG requirements and company policy.
- Coaches, disciplines, and/or terminates crew as necessary in a timely and appropriate manner, seeking the guidance of the Human Resource Manager.
- Must be able to perform any and all other duties as assigned by management.
- College degree preferred.
- STCW Basic Safety Training preferred
- STCW Crowd Management preferred
- Radar Observer endorsement preferred
- Must be age 21 or older
- Must hold a 100 ton or higher USCG Master’s License
- A valid issued TWIC card
- Three years in previous management or supervisory position in marine transportation
- Must have a thorough mechanical knowledge of boats and their operation
- Previous guest service experience essential, preferably on passenger boats.
- Ability to command and perform multiple tasks under pressure.
- Pass USCG pre-employment drug screen
- Must meet USCG physical examination requirements.
- Must be able to climb steep stairs, sit or stand for long periods of time and able to fit and climb through 24-inch deck hatch.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stretch, pull, climb and crawl without restrictions.
- Must have good vision (corrected to 20/20.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
- Must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance.
