BusinessRate turns public customer reviews into scores and rankings for local businesses. We collect review data at scale, score each business, rank it against its local competitors, and recognize the top performers in their market.

We're profitable and growing, with an engineering team of four. Everything — the data pipelines, the web applications, the payment flows, the internal tooling, the infrastructure — is built and maintained in house.

The role

You'd be writing code day to day, and also helping guide the work of two or three less experienced developers. Reviewing their pull requests and helping raise the quality of what we ship together is a real part of the job, and we're looking for someone who enjoys that side of it as well as the building.

Because the team is small, you'd work across the whole product rather than one corner of it. The data side is genuinely complex — large partitioned tables, queries that need to stay fast as volumes grow, and pipelines processing substantial amounts of data on an ongoing basis. There's also a customer-facing web application, payment flows, and internal dashboards, all of which need to be reliable.

What you'll do

- Design and build backend services and APIs that handle large-scale data processing, keeping results accurate and fast as volumes grow

- Work on database design and query performance across large, partitioned datasets — a lot of our most interesting problems live here

- Build and improve customer-facing web applications and internal dashboards using Next.js and tRPC

- Help keep our checkout and payment flows reliable

- Review pull requests and help raise the standard of what the team ships

- Take projects from an initial idea through to production

- Improve our architecture, deployment process, and development workflows

What we're looking for

You should have:

- Experience building and supporting production TypeScript and Node.js applications

- Strong PostgreSQL skills — schema design, indexing, and query optimization against large datasets

- Experience building substantial frontends with React, ideally Next.js

- Experience reviewing other engineers' code and helping them improve

- Comfort with AI-assisted development tools alongside solid engineering practices — we use them regularly and expect the same care with code written that way

- The ability to work through tradeoffs and make decisions with limited direction

Nice to have:

- tRPC, Fastify, or similar typed API layers

- Docker and modern deployment pipelines (we use Render)

- Stripe or other payments experience

- Experience with data pipelines and ETL at scale

- Having been the senior engineer on a small team before

Compensation and process

Base salary is $100,000–$170,000. The range is wide on purpose: the top is for someone who has done this at a senior level before and can take ownership immediately, and the bottom is for a strong mid-level engineer ready to grow into it. Tell us what you're looking for when you apply.
