Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) in Radiation Oncology is a key member of the oncology care team, responsible for coordinating and delivering comprehensive nursing care to patients receiving radiation oncology treatment. This role includes patient assessment, IV administration, lab monitoring, insurance authorization, treatment scheduling, and education. The RN ensures safe and efficient care by maintaining accurate documentation in the EMR, monitoring adverse reactions, and serving as a primary point of contact throughout the treatment process. This position requires strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Performs clinical duties under the direction of a physician.
  • Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records
  • Accompanying patients to the appropriate exam room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, and prepare them for the physician
  • Conducts comprehensive patient assessments, monitors patient status before, during, and after all procedures and therapies.
  • Ability to perform or learn phlebotomy and IV therapies; must be able to adhere to safety procedures involving radiopharmaceutical agents Educate patients and families on procedures, side effects, post-treatment care, radiation exposure risks, and the importance of follow-up.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for patients, guiding them through each step of the treatment process.
  • Prepares and maintains procedure rooms, including setting up instruments and equipment, and ensuring proper cleaning and infection control between patient visits.
  • Performs phlebotomy procedures and administers intravenous (IV) therapies, including handling radiopharmaceutical agents in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Monitors patients for adverse reactions and reports findings to the medical team.
  • Evaluates patient response to care plans and adjusts accordingly.
  • Orders and monitors lab tests required for treatment.
  • Schedules procedures in coordination with oncology and radiation departments.
  • Provides follow-up care after procedures to monitor recovery and address patient needs.
  • Assist patients with transfers and escort them to appropriate exam rooms.
  • Utilizes electronic medical records (EMR) to document, review, and maintain patient data, including test results, clinical notes, and physician orders.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisors, peers, patients, and physicians through various channels including in-person, phone, e-mail, and EMR systems.
  • Assists the providers with procedures that may or may not require moderate sedation.
  • Acts as a resource to clinical staff and supports educational initiatives, policy implementation, and training efforts.
  • Manages inventory and restocks patient care supplies; maintains appropriate supply records and supports supply ordering.
  • Answers clinical phone calls and ensures timely return of messages throughout the day.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of medical records and sensitive data.
  • Works assigned shifts; rotates between clinic locations as needed.
  • Performs additional duties assigned by supervisors, providers, or administrators.

Education & Qualification Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with a Diploma, associate’s degree, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing with the Arizona State Board of Nursing.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience; experience in Radiation Oncology, Oncology, or a related specialty preferred.

Licensure &Certification

  • Current, unrestricted RN license issued by the Arizona State Board of Nursing or a valid compact multi-state license
  • Valid CPR certification
