Summary/Objective

This team member applies a solid foundation of engineering experience to solving increasingly more difficult assignments, managing multiple priorities, leveraging known resources, doing so with minimal amounts of direct supervision. The types of problems include existing product, new products, and/or as-yet-undeveloped ideas that begin to focus more on system or sub-system solutions rather than component-specific problems. Support existing production products through VAVE and Continuous Improvement efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Design complete mechanical systems, products, or product families—ranging from simple products to complex systems—with light direction from senior engineers to meet customer requirements.
  • Participate as a core contributor on multifunctional product development teams.
  • Direct, coordinate, support, and/or audit manufacturing and assembly activities to ensure conformance to engineering specifications and customer expectations.
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate technical data (customer proposals, drawings, specifications, applications, manuals) to determine design and application feasibility with respect to cost, schedule, and performance.
  • Independently investigate and resolve engineering problems impacting scrap, warranty/reliability, and product cost for new and existing products.
  • Apply practical engineering knowledge to use stage‑gate development processes, engineering tools, and applicable industry standards.
  • Communicate design intent through clear, complete engineering documentation and specifications, and provide guidance to mechanical designers to ensure successful execution.
  • Predict test performance; plan, develop, and direct testing methods, procedures, and required test equipment.
  • Analyze test data to validate product performance, accuracy, and feasibility.

Other Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for project teams as needed.
  • Delegate appropriate design and analysis tasks to Mechanical Designers.
  • Perform hands-on preliminary testing of concepts when required.
  • Particiapte in and frequently lead hands-on assembly, prototyping, and Alpha build activities.
  • Direct or support faberication of test equiptment.
  • support continous improvement efforts related to manufacturability, testability, and quality.
  • Demonstrated ongoing commitment to company safety standards and personnal policies.
  • All other responsibilities assigned by management.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily working indoors, office environment.
  • May sit for several hours at a time.
  • Prolonged exposure to computer screens.
  • Repetitive use of hands to operate computers, printers, and copiers.
  • Travel to customer or other Lippert facilities may be required
  • Floor time at customers or other Lippert facilities may be required which may include walking, kneeling, crouching, sitting, standing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Enginerring or similar technical degree.
  • 3+ years’ experience in use of 3D CAD. AutoCAD Inventor or SolidWorks preferred.
  • Must be able to build relationships with customers and suppliers.
  • Self-motivated individual requiring minimal supervisory guidance.
  • Drive technical decisions
  • Ability to prepare technical and strategic issues for management decisions
  • Good communication and presentation skills to both customers and cross functional team
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Quality, LEAN, and continuous improvement

Competencies

  • Solid mechanical engineering experience; engineers components and systems with little supervisory technical oversight.
  • Experience and knowledge working with electromechanical types of components and/or subsystems
  • Experience with residential or retail air conditioning product design preferred
  • With oversight and guidance, develops a basic understanding and working knowledge of appropriate industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong working knowledge of drawing detailing and GD&T practices, able to fully detail component drawings with no assistance.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of tolerance stack-up analysis (TSA). Capable of performing accurate and complete system tolerance stack up analysis assessing accumulated dimension/tolerance variation of multi-component assemblies with minimal engineering oversight.
  • Practical working knowledge of stage-gate development processes.
  • Experience handling moderately complex engineering issues and problems and referring more complex issues to higher-level staff.
  • Possesses intermediate working knowledge of engineering principles related to the position. Has applied engineering principles frequently in practice
  • Strong team player skills and able to work well with others and support internal/external customer needs
  • >5000 hours experience using SolidWorks or other similar 3D CAD packages
  • >5000 hours PLM software experience (Enovia, Agile, other similar)
  • >500 hours experience using FEA programs (ideally Solidworks Simulation, ANSYS, or ABAQUS)
  • Demonstrated design engineering familiarity and capable of designing with light senior engineering direction:
    • Complex machined parts
    • Plastic injection molded parts
    • Zinc and aluminum alloy die castings
    • Sheet metal stampings
    • Products/assemblies with consideration for Design for Manufacturability

Supervisory Responsibility

This role does not have any supervisory responsibilities upon hiring.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the Team Member is regularly required to walk, sit, stand, bend, lift, and move continually during working hours. Is subject to lifting over 25 pounds. This position can involve sitting for various periods of time, and also requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping and crouching throughout the day. The Team Member must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, and the expected work hours are 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday; weekend and overnight work could also become necessary.

Travel

Travel is expected for this position approximately 5-8 times per year (total of 10-20 overnights).

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 3-6 years practical working experience in related field.
  • Experience in the design and manufacturing of air conditioning and refrigeration products.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
