Project Engineer / Coordinator
Job Description
Job Description
Project Engineer / Coordinator
Underground Wet Utility Construction
Compensation: $60,000 – $80,000 per year (Based on Experience)
Benefits: Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
Location: Chandler, AZ
Work Type: On-site, In-office Position
Position Summary
The Project Engineer / Coordinator is a hands-on, broad support role assisting our Project Managers, Operations Manager, and Controller across all phases of underground wet utility projects (water, sewer, and storm systems). This person is the go-to for keeping projects moving behind the scenes — building and tracking change orders, tracking expenses, setting up vendor and credit accounts, supporting billing, and handling the day-to-day administrative tasks that keep the project team organized. It's a broad role that touches nearly every aspect of a project from setup through closeout, and it's a great fit for someone organized, adaptable, and eager to learn the construction business from the inside.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management Support
• Assist Project Managers with day-to-day project needs: scheduling, documentation, correspondence, meeting notes, and follow-ups
• Help build, price out, and assemble change orders; maintain the change order log and track each CO from pending through approval, ensuring approved COs flow into contract values and billings
• Assist with material procurement — requesting quotes, placing orders, and tracking deliveries
• Support project setup in accounting/PM software and assist with closeout documentation (final waivers, retention billing, warranty docs)
• Maintain organized project files, logs, and records so information is easy to find when the team needs it
Operations Support
• Assist the Operations Manager with miscellaneous tasks that keep field and office operations running — permits, utility coordination items, equipment and vendor paperwork, and other ad hoc needs
• Set up and manage vendor credit accounts and supplier applications; maintain account records and contacts
• Track subcontractor and supplier compliance documents (insurance certificates, W-9s, licensing) and flag missing items before payments go out
Accounting & Expense Support
• Track project expenses, receipts, and credit card charges; code costs to the right jobs and help keep job cost reporting accurate
• Collect, log, and track lien waivers and Arizona 20-day preliminary notices; help ensure our own prelims are filed on time
• Reconcile subcontractor and supplier invoices against purchase orders and subcontracts before payment
• Support month-end reporting, budget vs. actual tracking, and WIP updates with the accounting team
Administrative Support
• Help track and prepare weekly corporate metrics for management meetings
• Ensure all mail is collected and distributed to the appropriate departments
• Order supplies for the corporate office as needed
• Other tasks as assigned by management
Qualifications
• Experience in project engineering, accounting support, or project coordination role — construction, underground utilities, or civil experience a plus, but we'll train the right person
• Strong organization, attention to detail, and follow-through on deadlines
• Comfortable juggling a variety of tasks and shifting priorities across multiple projects and managers
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Office; experience with construction accounting/PM software a plus
• Professional, clear communication with General Contractors, owners, subcontractors, and suppliers
• Familiarity with construction billing basics (lien waivers, preliminary notices, retention, pay apps) is helpful but not required — willingness to learn is what matters
Additional Notes.
This position may be filled at varying levels based on experience, and compensation and responsibilities will scale accordingly. For the right person, this role is a launching pad — there is real opportunity to grow into senior project accounting, contract administration, or project management support roles as you learn the business.
