Job Description

This position focuses on structural welding, fitting, and fabrication to repair and refurbish large-scale mining excavators and related heavy equipment. You will work inside a large, swamp-cooled fabrication bay, performing structural repairs on critical components that experience heavy wear and tear, using a combination of welding, gouging, cutting, and fitting skills to restore equipment to safe and reliable operation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural welding repairs on large mining excavators and other heavy equipment subjected to heavy-duty use.
  • Repair cracks, fractures, and worn components that result from ongoing equipment operation.
  • Weld a variety of materials, including AR400 and other abrasion-resistant steels, as well as mild and softer steels.
  • Gouge out defective or failed welds using appropriate techniques as part of repair and rebuild work.
  • Apply daily fabrication skills to cut, bend, fit, modify, and reinforce structural components to specification.
  • Use an oxy-acetylene torch to cut steel and to preheat AR steels prior to welding to ensure proper weld quality.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, and specifications to perform accurate layout and fit-up.
  • Grind, finish, and prepare materials and welds as needed to meet quality and safety standards.
  • Maintain high levels of quality, accuracy, and structural integrity on critical components.
  • Operate power tools and related equipment safely while performing fabrication and welding tasks.
  • Work in and around confined spaces and oversized equipment in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Communicate clearly with peers, supervisors, and support teams to coordinate repairs and maintain safe operations.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, including proper use of PPE and safe work practices in an industrial environment.
Essential Skills
  • Proven experience as a structural welder in heavy equipment, mining, or industrial environments.
  • Proficiency welding abrasion-resistant steels such as AR400 and similar materials, as well as mild steel.
  • Experience with carbon arc gouging or similar weld removal techniques for removing defective welds.
  • Strong fabrication skills, including layout, fit-up, cutting, bending, and structural reinforcement.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to use an oxy-acetylene torch for cutting steel and preheating AR steels.
  • Experience working with thick-gauge hardened steel and translating structural welding skills to heavy equipment components.
  • Competence using power tools and fabrication equipment in an industrial setting.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively in a large bay environment and around oversized mining machinery.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a team in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Background in mining, heavy equipment repair, or industrial fabrication environments.
  • Experience working in confined spaces and around large, complex machinery.
  • Familiarity with structural reinforcement techniques for heavy-duty equipment.
  • Comfort working in physically demanding roles that require lifting, positioning, and working around large components.
Why Work Here?

The organization offers a comprehensive and competitive total rewards package designed to support long-term financial security, health, and work-life balance. Employees have access to multiple medical plan options with prescription drug coverage, as well as dental and vision insurance, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, and accidental death and dismemberment coverage. The role is hands-on and physically demanding, involving regular work on oversized mining machinery and heavy components. You will frequently use welding equipment, oxy-acetylene torches, power tools, and fabrication tools while working in and around confined spaces and large structures.
