Job Summary

This position is scheduled to begin in Fall 2026. The Welding Instructor teaches a diverse student population in both classroom and laboratory settings, delivering competency‑based instruction in core welding processes and related technologies. Primary teaching responsibilities include SMAW, oxy‑fuel welding/cutting, and PAC/CAC processes as scheduling requires. The instructor maintains a safe, high‑functioning welding laboratory that meets or exceeds OSHA standards, assists with budget planning, and ensures proper care of equipment, materials, and instructional resources.

The role also includes building and sustaining strong partnerships with local industry, workforce organizations, and high schools to support student recruitment, dual‑enrollment pathways, internships, and job placement. The instructor contributes to program growth by supporting registration efforts, advising students, and helping graduates transition into the workforce. A successful candidate demonstrates a commitment to service excellence, innovation in teaching, student success, integrity, and the values of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of their work.

Essential Functions

  • Teaches a diverse population of students in both classroom and laboratory environments, using a full range of instructional technologies including instructor workstations, projectors, document cameras, whiteboards, digital media, and sample assignments to support clear, effective demonstrations.

  • Develops and maintains high‑quality course materials, including syllabi, course outlines, and competency‑based assessments. Utilizes the CANVAS learning management system and other online instructional tools to deliver content, track progress, and support student learning. Evaluates student mastery of subject matter through exams, performance assessments, and practical demonstrations. Maintains scheduled academic support hours to advise, tutor, and mentor students.

  • Actively participates in the academic life of the college, contributing to district‑wide and campus committees, initiatives, and professional activities that support student success and program excellence.

  • Maintains current knowledge of welding technologies, instructional practices, and industry standards, continually enhancing expertise in both subject matter and teaching methodology. Engages in ongoing professional development—including conferences, certifications, coursework, seminars, and workshops—to stay aligned with emerging trends such as automation, advanced processes, safety innovations, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Minimum Qualifications

For occupational disciplines, a combination of education and/or experience is required to qualify. A faculty may qualify with any of the following:

  • Five years of occupational experience in the field to be taught OR
  • Three years of occupational experience in the field to be taught and a Bachelor’s degree or higher OR
  • A Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field OR
  • A Master’s degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credits in the teaching field OR
  • A Master’s degree or higher in any field with a combination of 24 upper division and/or graduate credits in the teaching field

Desired Qualifications

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or demonstrated mastery of welding terminology, welding symbols, welding procedure specifications (WPS/PQR), and a foundational understanding of non‑destructive examination (NDE) methods.
  • Experience and/or certifications in welding instruction at the community college, high school, or industry‑training level, with the ability to teach diverse learners in classroom and lab environments.
  • Experience developing and teaching online or hybrid welding courses, including curriculum design and the use of instructional technologies such as CANVAS, Moodle, Blackboard, and open‑source welding education platforms.
  • Experience and/or certification in AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code—Steel, including SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW (gas‑shielded and self‑shielded) on carbon steel; and experience with GTAW on aluminum, stainless steel, and carbon steel, including familiarity with AWS D17.1 Aerospace Welding Code.

Special Working Conditions

This is an active, hands‑on instructional position that requires extensive time in the welding laboratory. The instructor must be able to demonstrate welding processes, work alongside students at welding booths, and operate fabrication equipment in a high‑heat, high‑noise environment while maintaining strict safety standards.
