The Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) is responsible for the overall operation, compliance, and clinical integrity of the specialty pharmacy. This role ensures adherence to all state and federal regulations, accreditation standards (e.g., URAC), and internal policies, while leading pharmacy operations, managing staff, and supporting high-quality patient care.
The PIC plays a critical leadership role in optimizing specialty medication workflows, ensuring safe dispensing practices, and supporting growth initiatives across targeted disease states.
Job Responsiblities
- Serve as the designated Pharmacist in Charge per state Board of Pharmacy requirements
- Ensure full compliance with federal and state pharmacy laws (DEA, HIPAA, FDA, Board of Pharmacy regulations)
- Maintain pharmacy licensure, controlled substance records, and inspection readiness
- Oversee adherence to URAC and other specialty pharmacy accreditation standards
- Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures
- Oversee daily pharmacy operations including prescription processing, verification, and dispensing
- Ensure accuracy, safety, and efficiency of all pharmacy workflows
- Monitor inventory management, procurement, and storage of specialty medications
- Implement and maintain quality assurance and performance improvement programs
- Oversee cold chain management and specialty drug handling requirements
- Provide clinical oversight for specialty therapies (e.g., SUD LAIs, oncology, Hep C, inflammatory conditions)
- Support medication therapy management, patient education, and adherence programs
- Review and approve clinical protocols and therapy guidelines
- Collaborate with providers and care teams to optimize patient outcomes
- Supervise pharmacists, technicians, and support staff
- Recruit, train, and evaluate pharmacy personnel
- Foster a culture of accountability, compliance, and patient-centered care
- Ensure staff competency with specialty workflows and regulatory requirements
- Lead efforts for URAC or ACHC accreditation and ongoing compliance
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to quality, turnaround times, and patient outcomes
- Conduct internal audits and implement corrective action plans
- Partner with leadership on pharmacy expansion and service line growth
- Support integration with care management, provider networks, and specialty programs
- Participate in payer relationships, audits, and contract requirements
- Active Registered Pharmacist license (Arizona)
- Retail pharmacy experience required
- Prior managerial or leadership experience
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced retail environment
- Registered Pharmacist acceptable/ PharmD preferred
- Knowledge of 340B programs
- Experience managing high prescription volume
