POSITION SUMMARY
The Emergency Nurse Supervisor is a leadership role within Tohono O'odham Nation Health Care facility emergency room, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the delivery of emergency nursing care services. This position involves providing clinical supervision, ensuring quality patient care, and facilitating efficient operations within the emergency department to meet the healthcare needs of the tribal community. Delegates responsibilities to auxiliary and emergency room staff nurses; supervises preparation and maintenance of emergency room patient clinical records and writes
reports on emergency room staff performance and services rendered. Maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and adherence to opioid and other controlled substance regimens.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide clinical supervision and leadership to emergency department nursing staff, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, medical assistant and unit clerks.
- Coordinate patient care activities and triage procedures to prioritize and manage patient flow effectively.
- Assess patient acuity and ensure appropriate assignment of nursing resources to meet patient needs.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, allied health professionals, and support staff to optimize patient outcomes and safety.
- Oversee the implementation and adherence to evidence-based nursing protocols, standards, and policies within the emergency department.
- Conduct regular audits and quality assurance reviews to monitor compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
- Mentor and coach nursing staff on clinical skills, best practices, and professional development opportunities.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities, including disaster drills and training exercises.
- Serve as a liaison between the emergency department, other healthcare units, and external agencies to facilitate seamless patient care transitions and referrals.
- Assist in the development and implementation of educational programs, policies, and procedures related to emergency nursing care.
- Submits activity reports per organization requirements.
- Attends and actively participates in organizational required meetings such as Infection Control, Safety etc.
- Acts on behalf of the Chief Nurse Executive when delegated.
- Will provide direct emergency room care when needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of three years of clinical experience in emergency nursing, with at least one year in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited institution.
- Current and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in a state of the United States is required and must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Advanced certification in emergency nursing (e.g., CEN, CPEN) preferred. Current certification in Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) is required upon hire.

- Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Comprehensive knowledge of emergency nursing principles, practices, and procedures.
- Strong leadership and management skills to effectively supervise and motivate nursing staff.
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to make timely and informed decisions in emergency situations.
- Proficiency in clinical assessment, triage, and patient care management across the lifespan.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, healthcare team members, and community stakeholders.
- Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure while maintaining professionalism and empathy.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations, standards, and compliance requirements relevant to emergency nursing practice.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development to stay updated on advances in emergency medicine and nursing.
Physical Demands
Ability to stand, walk, and move about for extended periods. Work may involve exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and physical hazards inherent to the healthcare environment. Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed to ensure 24/7 coverage in the emergency department. May be required to respond to emergency situations and participate in disaster response efforts, which may involve prolonged hours and stressful conditions. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Special Requirements & Acknowledgment:
Tohono O'odham Nation is an Indian Preference Employer. Employees are expected to know existing Tohono O'odham Nation policies and know to refer to those policies when necessary.
Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.
Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record. Position may require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years). If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
