Research Specialist

Arizona State University - School of Life Sciences
Tempe, AZ

We invite applications for an NIH-funded research scientist position to join a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary research team focused on studies of intestinal stem cells, early developmental programming, and oncogenic transformation using genome editing methods with multi-omic approaches.

The successful candidate will lead projects aimed at dissecting the developmental programming of intestinal stem cells using human iPSC-derived colon organoids. The position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the interface of developmental and stem cell biology, tumor initiation, and single-cell methods. The research involves human iPS cell culture, genome editing, in vitro directed differentiation, modeling of early events in colorectal cancer, and multi-omic applications. Responsibilities will include performing experiments, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and collaborating effectively with members of the lab.

Outstanding candidates should have the following required qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge in stem cell biology, differentiation, gene regulation.
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications commensurate with experience.
  • Experience with iPSC culture and genome editing tools.
  • Basic computation skills in R or Python, with an interest in increasing proficiency for single cell applications and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students, and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.

Additional preferred qualifications include:

  • Training in epigenetics, developmental biology, molecular genetics.
  • Experience with in vivo models and organoid cultures.
  • Proficiency with single-cell applications including analysis.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, motivation, and scientific rigor.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Interest in mentoring graduate students and undergraduates.

Anticipated start is Spring 2026, but remains flexible for applicants with desired qualifications. This position is expected to run for at least two consecutive years. The second-year renewal is contingent upon satisfactory progress and contribution to the collective program.

About the PI: Miyeko D. Mana is an assistant professor in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University and a research affiliate at Mayo Clinic Arizona. She is an American Cancer Society Research Scholar with over 2900 citations, known for her contributions to understanding how diets affect intestinal stem cells using mouse and organoid models.

About the Lab: The lab explores how intestinal stem cells are influenced by environmental factors that promote or protect against intestinal pathologies. The focus is the metabolic-transcriptional-epigenetic axis that governs stem cell intrinsic adaptations to diet. The lab is part of the larger regenerative biology and regenerative medicine community studying basic and biomedical questions. The lab is located in the heart of the ASU Tempe campus with access to numerous core facilities. It is part of the School of Life Sciences within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

About the University: ASU is a large, dynamic public research university. As articulated in the ASU Charter, ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural, and overall health of the communities it serves. The university has been ranked #1 for innovation by the US News & World Report for the past eleven years.

ASU is located within the Phoenix metro area in Tempe Arizona. The area enjoys a diverse international and cultural community with many natural outdoor features and activities throughout the state.

Working Environment: Activities are performed in an office and lab setting subject to extended periods of field work, sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse, and standing for varying lengths of time. May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories such as lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, closed toe shoes, and respirator. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. This position receives regular review of objectives by department administrator.
