Veterinary Technician - VETECH 25-24686
Job Title: Veterinary Technician
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Position Summary: The technician ensures the proper and secure collection of samples (blood, urine, hair) from racing animals, maintaining the integrity of procedures and supporting regulatory compliance.
Major Responsibilities:
Assist with the collection of test samples (blood, urine, hair) from animals.
Follow best practices for test barn operations to maintain proper chain of custody; record, package, and ship samples securely to laboratories.
Maintain cleanliness and organization in lab and barn areas.
Maintain veterinary exam records; assist with injury risk data collection and injury review meetings.
Report any violations of Arizona statutes or racing regulations to supervising officials.
Assist with split sample processing and regulatory inspections.
Support investigators during backside barn inspections for possible violations.
Notify trainers of animals placed on the veterinarian’s list; respond to inquiries from trainers, owners, and veterinarians about regulatory procedures and required observations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with Arizona racing commission rules and statutes applicable to animal racing.
Understanding of veterinarian duties and animal racing anatomy.
Ability to identify racing animals through registration documentation and physical characteristics (tattoos, markings, etc.).
Knowledge of investigative techniques and accurate recordkeeping.
Skill in handling and controlling excitable animals and familiarity with racing breeds and equipment.
Strong horsemanship and interpretation of racetrack procedures.
Ability to detect regulatory violations, especially in the paddock area.
Professional demeanor and ability to conduct duties courteously.
Capable of prioritizing and managing multiple tasks efficiently.
Proficient in preparing reports and following both verbal and written instructions.
Strong communication skills and detail-oriented work habits.
Adaptability to shifting assignments and collaborative team player across divisions.
Excellent interpersonal skills with agency personnel and the public.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Minimum Requirements:
Certified Veterinary Technician license from the Arizona Board of Veterinary Medicine.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
