Position Overview:
The Cardiac Stress Technician will work under the direct supervision of site physician, performing various professional and administrative duties related to nuclear medicine cardiac stress testing. This includes, but is not limited to patient preparation, administration of exercise and pharmacological stress tests, and application of ACLS measures to patients when directed. CST’s will comply with HIPAA regulations. Paid training as it relates to Cardiac Stress Technician requirements and job duties.
Essential Functions:
- Preparation of patient for stress testing procedure by:
- Verifying patient identity using a two-step verification process.
- Basic screening questions.
- Obtain written consent.
- Assess patient blood pressure, pulse, respirations, lung sounds, and establish Peripheral Intravenous (IV) access.
- Set up and monitor patient through 12 lead EKG stress testing including application of 12 lead and rhythm identification and interpretation.
- Preparation of pharmacological stress agents, dose calculation, and administration.
- Under the direct supervision of the site physician, application of ACLS algorithms if patient experiences complications during the procedure.
- Driving company van and following Radiation Safety and Department of Transportation regulations. And wearing radiation-sensitive badges provided by MDOS.
- Preparation and set-up of mobile operations at customer site including preparing and inventorying pharmaceutical and medical supplies brought to customer site, assisting in loading/unloading of equipment in/out of van, take down of equipment in customer site, and disposal of medical waste, and return to MDOS hub location.
- Responsible for maintaining non-nuclear medical supplies and equipment, ensuring scheduled maintenance is completed and batteries checked. CST is responsible to safely store and maintain issued equipment such as laptop computers, medication pumps, medical bags, and other issued equipment.
- Patient charting to be completed and submitted on the same day of service to meet accreditation requirements and MDOS policy.
- In cooperation with the Director of Operations, participates in the training and mentoring of new employees.
- Report any equipment or vehicle issues to a manager.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education, Training & Certification:
- American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), required within 30-days of date of hire.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
- Paramedic license, EMT license, RN, LVN, Medical Assistant, etc. with some experience in the medical field and/or an emergency care setting with experience responding to emergent cardiac and pulmonary events is preferred.
- Experience with starting IV’s, EKG lead placement and interpretation strongly preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
Your formal training will prepare you to perform your job duties, but you'll also need soft skills to succeed as a cardiac stress technologist:
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with customers and patients and gain their trust and respect.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in all areas.
- Ability to react in an emergency and determine the best course of action or care for the patient, and application of ACLS algorithms, if physician is providing direct supervision.
- Able to work independently and under pressure.
- Must be able to stand for longer periods of time.
- Required to push/pull 800lbs+ of medical equipment.
- Must have valid and maintain a driver’s license with no violations.
Work Environment:
- Employers of nuclear medicine technologists include hospitals, physicians’ offices, and diagnostic laboratories.
- There are risks associated with this occupation. As with all healthcare professionals, you could be exposed to infectious diseases. Your work could also expose you to small amounts of radiation and you must take measures to protect yourself, your coworkers, and your patients’ using gloves and other shielding devices. MDOS nuclear medicine technologists are required to always wear radiation-sensitive badges when on duty to monitor their exposure.
- Will require emergency response participation in the event of a radioactive or nuclear spill. The job duties and responsibilities outlined are not exhaustive and may be subject to change based on the needs of the company.
